Google Chrome Blocks 7 Billion Abusive Notifications a Day With Multi-Layered Defenses
Brief
Google Chrome has reduced abusive notifications on Android by more than 7 billion per day during the first quarter of 2026, according to a new technical overview from Chrome Security, Safe Browsing , and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM).
The milestone reflects a multi-year effort to curb a web feature frequently exploited by scammers, malware distributors, and fraud operators.
While browser notifications can provide legitimate real-time updates from websites, threat actors have increasingly weaponized them to deliver deceptive alerts, fake security warnings, credential-harvesting lures, and fraudulent payment prompts.
