Apple Strengthens macOS Privacy Controls as AI Agents Gain More System Access
Brief
Apple has announced plans to introduce stronger safeguards around Full Disk Access in macOS, a high-privilege permission that lets an application read sensitive information across a user’s device.
The move directly addresses the expanding capabilities of autonomous AI agents , which increasingly require broad access to local files, communications, and browser data to perform tasks on a user’s behalf.
In a developer notice published on October 2, Apple said Full Disk Access was designed primarily to let legitimate backup software work correctly.
Apple Strengthens macOS Privacy Controls
The permission largely bypasses normal macOS privacy protections, allowing approved applications to access data that would otherwise be restricted by the operating system’s consent and sandboxing controls.
